When considering first class travel these days it’s not just about the airline travel and where you happen to be seated. Although that is definitely a way to travel first class, it’s also been a declining expectation these days. Airlines have been cutting the number of first class seats so that they can expand the other sections of the airplane and generate even more revenue per square foot of the cabins.
The expectations of first class travel are all about comfort and convenience. The size of the seat, its leather comfort, the availability of nicer pillows and warmer blankets are all there. Then there’s the food, served on china instead of in plastic boxes, the wine with your steak, red or white, the free cocktails. The really first class experiences give you convenience of time too – boarding first, exiting first, all give you more time.
The industry watchers have been predicting the demise of first class all together but it just can’t seem to go away. Why is that? Well, there will always be travelers able to afford this experience. There will always be companies who consider it a right of passage and not a reward but an expectation for their executives to be seen in first class.
Corporations who are getting the bailouts or asking for them these days from governments all over do not want to be seen in first class to draw attention to themselves though. That should only be for a few years though!
However, if you start your trip with a first class seat on a plane, you might expect the first class experience to continue on to the rest of your trip. Your hotel room, the limo service that takes you to it, the food served in your room by your personal chef should be there too.
That takes first class travel to the ultimate experience that might be worth it. But who can afford to keep the first class experience going to that level? So for now, let your travel agent suggest how you can get the most out of your travel and get at least some first class travel.
